Is there an advantage to using the services of MED TOURS LATINAMERICA instead of doing it myself?

Of course you can contact an overseas physician, hospital or clinic yourself, book your reservations and make all the arrangements; some people have done this in the past. However, even for the seasoned traveler making hotel reservations and arrangements for transportation in a foreign country present a challenge. Not to mention, adding the stress of finding an accredited physician and hospital in in a non-English speaking destination.

Using the services of a medical tourism facilitator, such as MED TOURS LATINAMERICA, will eliminate a lot of the uncertainty. Most importantly, our team has visited each country, has personally inspected the hospitals, clinics and hotels as well as interviewed each physician on our network to verify their qualifications; in short, we have done the leg work for you.

We will care for you from the moment you arrive at your destination to the time you return home, MED TOURS LATINAMERICA will manage the entire process for you. It is a definite advantage for you to work with a medical tourism facilitator.

Why should I consider medical or surgical procedures outside the US?

With costs of medical care in the United States escalating, some treatments are not economically feasible for individuals to pay out of pocket. When treatment is elective or not covered by your insurance policy, Medical Tourism is definitely an option you should think of, not only will you be receiving care from highly skilled physicians but will be saving considerably on the overall cost. Medical procedures costs in the countries we feature generally range around 25-60% less than the price of the same procedure in the U.S., plus it includes a luxury vacation staying at 4 to 5 star hotels, private local transportation and a Destination Personal Assistant to take care of you. Like many Americans you are seeking high quality medical procedures at the best value. MED TOURS LATINAMERICA offers you a high value, high-quality option for the medical procedures you are looking for and if your health permits it a lovely vacation all at once. A June 2009 MTA Patient Survey found almost 90% of patients or their companions engaged in tourism activities.

Is it safe to travel after surgery?

Your health is our primary concern, so your plans have to be tailored around the surgery you will undergo. When you have decided on a procedure, your destination physician will advise you of the time required for recuperation before you can travel. What if something goes wrong? It is reasonable for people to ask what their legal options are when they are contemplating seeking medical care overseas in case something goes wrong. At this time there is no legal structure in place to protect patients traveling abroad for health care. If this concern weighs heavily on your mind you should seek other medical options locally. In the improbable case some medical malpractice error happens, is not realistic to think that monetary gain could be anticipated in a foreign country. Nevertheless, when patients travel overseas they have a great deal of power assuring excellent results. The power we speak of is the image that international hospitals and physicians are trying to maintain to attract patients from other countries and any negative publicity would be very damaging to their global image. These hospitals and physicians are highly focused on making sure you are safe and content during your visit. When you are undergoing surgery there are no guarantees, internationally or in your hometown hospital.

What is the cost differential of health care overseas?

The cost differential will vary according to the procedure. When we compare the prices of procedures in the U.S. against the same procedure in our destinations we find that they are 25-60% lower overseas. The amazing thing is that by choosing medical tourism, you have your procedure done, spend your recovery time in a 4 to 5 star hotel, tour your host country before or after your procedure and still go home having spent less money than you would have in the U.S. on the procedure alone.

Why is health care less expensive abroad?

There are many reasons why health care is less expensive abroad, lower costs in general is the chief differential and with medical tourism patients, because they pay cash or with credit card, there is no collection fees or bad debt, there is less red tape and in most destinations there is no medical insurance offered and prices stay lower. The price being lower does not, in any way, indicate that the technology and quality of care offered are not equal to that found in the U.S., as a matter of fact, most of the private hospitals in our network use the very same equipment as in the best hospitals in the U.S.

Are foreign doctors qualified to perform my procedure?

For our network of medical providers we have carefully selected and personally interviewed each of the physicians. We have chosen only the doctors offering the uppermost levels of education, experience and skill, with not only board certifications in their countries but in most cases members of professional organizations in the U.S. and/or abroad these are doctors that consistently expand their education by taking part in additional training sessions internationally to learn the newest techniques and developments in their specialty.

During your initial consultation you will have the opportunity to discuss your physician´s credentials and his level of expertise in the specific procedure you are considering.

How can I correspond with a doctor in a foreign country?

As medical tourism facilitators we will coordinate your initial video conference with your chosen physician, thereafter, you may contact him/her by phone, e-mail if you so desire. Keep in mind that when considering plastic/cosmetic surgery, the surgeon may ask you to provide photos of the general area you will be operated on so he/she can determine the options that are available to you, these photos can be e-mailed and to ensure your privacy protection, identified only by your case number.

Are the hospitals safe?

Bearing in mind that your health is our primary concern we do everything possible to make sure that the hospitals or surgical facilities offered to you are comparable to hospitals in the U.S., we have visited each one of them to confirm their standards of hygiene and technology. Even though the hospitals in our network have been certified and approved by the regulating authorities in their country, we are working with their administrators and management to strive towards accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI) and/or the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Results of a patient survey by the Medical Tourism Association, when asked “How would you rate the hospital you received medical care at?” 70.7% responded “Excellent,” while 26.8% stated “Very Good.” Moreover, 63.4% of respondents indicated that they felt their overall medical experience was “better than it would have been in the USA, while 36.4% of respondents stated their experiences were “equal to what it would have been in the USA.”

Can you choose which doctors and/or hospitals I use?

As a medical tourism facilitator, we make available to you all the information you will need to make an educated decision about the services that are offered. We are not medical doctors, so we will not offer you medical advice, but as facilitators we will present you with the options available to you through our network. We do not counsel, recommend, support or endorse any of the physicians, hospitals and/or healthcare facilities in our network. You make the decisions. What we do is help you in your research, getting your questions answered and once your decision is made we help you coordinate your medical journey.

Can I bring someone with me, if so how much will it cost me?

A June 2009 MTA Patient Survey found almost 83% of patients traveled with a companion. Usually there is either, no hotel charge or a small fee if they stay in the same room, depending on the individual hotel´s policies. As in any trip, your companion will incur the typical expenses, such as flight, meals, local transportation, touring fees and other travel fees.

How long will I have to remain in the destination after my procedure? This will depend totally on the procedure that you are undergoing. We recommend that you discuss it with your physician at the time of your phone conference. Keep in mind that everyone´s body responds differently, but your physician should be able to give you a close estimate.

Does my health insurance policy apply when I’m outside the United States?

You can’t assume your insurance will go with you when you travel. It’s very important to find out beforeyou leave.

Will it cover emergencies like a trip to a foreign hospital or an evacuation?

In many places, doctors and hospitals still expect payment in cash at the time of service. You can’t simply give them your insurance card and expect it will go through. If your policy doesn’t go with you when you travel, it’s a very good idea to purchase a separate policy for your trip.

The Social Security Medicare Program does not provide coverage for hospital or medical costs outside the United States.

What’s the difference between Travel Insurance, Medical Tourism Complication Insurance and Travel Medical Insurance?

  • Travel Insurance insures your financial investment in your trip. Typically it covers such things as the cost of lost baggage and cancelled flights, but it may or may not cover costs of medical attention you may need while abroad.
  • Travel Medical Insurance covers costs of medical attention you may need while abroad.
  • Medical Tourism Medical Complication insurance covers you in the event of a complication while you are obtaining medical treatment abroad; a standard trip or travel medical insurance policies do not provide coverage, these types of insurance will be of no help if you are facing a medical complication and would cancel any travel medical insurance policy.
  • What insurance information should I carry with me abroad?
  • Carry both your insurance policy identity card as proof of your insurance and a claim form.
